There can be reasons for which God can choose to communicate through other people. For example:
- People may fear to speak to God directly (Exodus 20:18-21).
- People may have a false belief about God preventing them from speaking to God directly (Deuteronomy 5:24-27).
You can find more details below:
People may fear to speak to God directly:
God may choose to communicate through other people because people may fear communicating with God directly.
For example:
It is written "all the people were perceiving the voice, and the lightning flashes, and the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; BUT ALL THE PEOPLE HAVING FEARED, STOOD AT A DISTANCE. And THEY SAID TO MOSES, “YOU SPEAK TO US, AND LET NOT GOD BE SPEAKING TO US, LETS WE DIE.” And Moses says to them, “Be taking courage, for God came to you to test you, that His FEAR shall become among you, that you shall not be sinning.” SO THE PEOPLE STOOD AT A DISTANCE, but Moses went into the darkness where God was" (Exodus 20:18-21).
People may have a false belief about God preventing them from speaking to God directly:
God may choose to communicate through other people because people may have a false belief about God preventing them from speaking to God directly.
For example:
God said to His people: "you were saying, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown to us His glory, and we have heard His voice out of the midst of the fire; in this day WE SAW THAT GOD WILL SPEAK TO A PERSON, AND HE WILL LIVE" (Deuteronomy 5:24). The people rightly acknowledge that God can speak to a person, and that person can live.
But then, the people came up with a false belief about God, saying: "And now we shall not die, will we? For this great fire will consume us, if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any more, and we will die. For WHAT FLESH IS THERE WHICH HEARD THE VOICE of the living God speaking out of the midst of the FIRE, as we have, AND WILL LIVE?" (Deuteronomy 5:25-26). The people said that the previous time that God spoke to a person and that person lived would have been extraordinary, as it would not have been usual for a person to not die in the midst of a fire, which they assume would consume them if they further try to speak to us in these conditions. This was now a false belief that they created which would prevent them from further trying to speak to God directly.
As a result of their false belief about God, the people asked for someone else to speak to God for God to then speak to them, saying: "YOU go near, and hear as many things as the LORD our God shall say, AND YOU WILL SPEAK TO US ALL, AS MANY THINGS AS THE LORD OUR GOD SHALL SPEAK TO YOU, and we will hear, and will do.’" (Deuteronomy 5:27).
